Story via Setting
Visit a place you are unfamiliar with. You could eat at a new restaurant, peek into the windows and explore the surrounding area of a building for lease, shop in the historic down town of a town you've never been to, or something else.
Whatever you do, ask yourself questions: Who would feel welcome here? How about out of place? Who might use this building next? Why or how was this place built? Why or how might it come to ruin in the future? What sort of relationships would exist in this space? Most important of all, what problem might who have here and how will they solve it?
If you can take your chosen setting and answer that last question

Mentally Disabled
When have you ever read, or even heard of, a book/movie/graphic novel/whatever in your favorite genre that had a main character who was mentally disabled?
My challenge to you is to write that story, or at least the premise of one.
There's quite a few disabilities to choose from:
Autism
A character with Autism has distorted or overloaded senses, and will easily get overwhelmed by new textures, changing appearances, and facial expressions. They tend to like repetition, organization, and simplicity. What would happen if Eragon from the "Inheritance Cycle" were Autistic?
Asperger's Syndrome
This is actually a variant on the Autism spectrum
Scour your school's lost and found (or your junk drawer if you're not in school) and find the weirdest possible items. Pick your favorite.
Write about why you might have found, kept, and then lost that item. Then write another story about why an imaginary character found, kept, and lost the same item somewhere else. Rinse and repeat with new characters until you're exhausted from writing.
Bonus points if...
- All your stories have a connecting theme represented by the item that keeps getting lost and found.
- The item in question travels from one end of a continent to another over the course of all your stories.
Uses:
- Create an anthol

But birds do die

Plastic bags barely cover

The first time I saw her outside of school, I almost didn't recognize her. She had a happiness about her that I had never seen before. But since people don't like the first part last, I won't talk about that yet. I'll talk about the first time I saw her, ever.

You can always tell when someone doesn't have friends, especially in a classroom. The first day, they don't even bother searching for familiar faces coming through the door, because they know none of the faces will be familiar to them. Also, they always have to be doing something else in that lull between classes- reading, or picking at their nails, or doing homework. It's like th
The feathers from the pillow softly fell. Mixed feathers, they were. And I suppose they did not fall so much as floated downward, slowly drifted. They sliced the air so damn softly. A surprising amount of colours too. I'm not sure why, but I was expecting them all to be white. Maybe because of the movies. Or because pillow fights are so childish, so innocent. They also didn't fall in clouds, in poofs, like the movies. Explosion in wonderful fashion, oh no. Now this would be the part where we screw it and rip their white cases apart, so that it really does. Grab handfuls and toss them upward. But these feathers aren't perfec
My mother's been sick for a month now,
lying in bed,
sweating,
crying,
dying.
It was too hard not to sweat in the house,
but whether it was because of the heat,
or worry,
I wasn't sure.
So I went outside
and took a walk
while my mother lay still within,
her lungs the only things moving.
Maybe.
I've heard tales of sick, dying parents,
but in stories, fiction,
never in real life
until now.
I am not mad about this,
just sad that I was never warned
that this could happen.
Anger is not what makes me feel so hot.
The shade keeps me cool.
I slump down and look at the tree towering above my head,
overwhelming.
Suddenly I fee
I can hear your voice so soft,
you say forever, you say it's love.
All these words are feather light,
floating down from up above.
They surround me and caress me,
with touches so smooth and soft.
They're colorful and make me happy,
as through the air they waft.
You fall asleep but still they float,
as I lay in silence by your side.
They make me feel so completely safe,
and warm on the inside.
I love the way you love me,
and I'll enjoy it while it remains.
I'll enjoy your whirlwind of feathers,
and all the joy that it contains.

I announce the Haiku contest closed! We have a grand total of two entries, lol. Thank you VERY much ~Arthisa (https://www.deviantart.com/arthisa) and :iconjingle-da-jester:!
In a few days, we'll have them judged for 1st and 2nd place. Good luck, both of you! I'll send a note to both of you when the results are posted. I wish I could just take care of this today, but my senior presentation takes place Wednesday. I'm super busy, and then I'll flop onto the couch in some kind of coma...
I'm really wondering why the 6 word story contest had so many entries while this one did not. Are Haikus out of style?
And on that note, any suggestions for the next contest? I'm considering

Haikus are another form of writing that focus on packing wonder into a very small amount of words. The best haikus, like the one above, are prized in history for suspending time while you read it.
Contest Rules:
Comment on this journal with your very own complete Haiku. Remember: The first line contains 5 syllables, the second line 7 syllables, and then the third has 5 again. (our example above only follows those rules in Japanese)
Prizes:
The best three will be featured on the next journal entry a
Thank you to everyone who submitted to the 6 word story contest!. I really appreciate the fantastic variety and sheer volume (13!) of the entries. :D
I like these quick contests. Tell me if you disagree, but it seems like they're a lot easier to submit work to. Sure, the entries are short, but a grain of salt is often more appreciated than a 1 pound salt lick. These quick entries are really well thought out. That being said, here's the promised feature:
~jonathoncomfortreed (https://www.deviantart.com/jonathoncomfortreed) 1st Place
:iconicy-moon-shadow: 2nd Place
:iconelectrickiss: :iconForeverIsLimited: Tied for 3rd Place
And Don't Forget Everyone Else!

It is intended for teen writers. If you are an adult and still want to submit, we can give a link to your deviation as an example and we will favorite it!
